Overpacking

Bali is a tropical destination, and you’ll likely spend most of your time in swimwear and light clothing. Avoid overpacking and keep your luggage minimal. This can also help you to save on baggage fees if you are travelling on a budget.

Neglecting Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must, especially in case of medical emergencies or unexpected events.

We recommened SafetyWing. SafetyWing tailor their travel insurance specifically for digital nomads. You pay on a monthly basis and this can be cancelled at any time!

Not Protecting Against Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are common all over Asia

Bali has a risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Use repellent and consider taking anti-malarial medication if recommended.

We also recommend speaking to a medical professional, prior to your visit!

Disrespecting Local Customs

bali tradition

Bali is deeply rooted in Hindu culture, and it’s essential to show respect for their traditions and customs. Dress modestly when visiting temples and avoid public displays of affection.

Over-tipping

While tipping is appreciated, over-tipping can be seen as excessive. Follow local tipping customs, which are often less than in Western countries.

Not Bargaining

Bargaining is a common practice in local markets all over Asia, but many tourists shy away from it. Don’t be afraid to haggle for a fair price.

You should agree on a price that is fair for both the buyer and the seller. Nobody wants to feel like they have been scammed, but it is also nice to help out the lcoals by not bargaining too hard. The small difference in price may not seem like a lot to you, but may go a long way in the eyes of the local working in the market!

Drinking Tap Water

The tap water in Bali is not safe to drink. Always opt for bottled water, and make sure the bottle seal is intact.

You may also find some water filling stations on the side of the road. We recommended using these whenever you see them, as they are cheaper than buying water from the supermarket, and because you can re-use the same plastic bottle (reducing single use plastic!)

Riding Without a Helmet

If you rent a scooter or motorbike, always wear a helmet. It is actually illegal to not wear a helmet whilst on a scooter or motorbike in Indonesia. Yes, you will see many locals (and tourists) not wearing a helmet whilst they are driving, but you will often see tourists being stopped by the police and forced to pay a fine (even if the locals are not being stopped).

Local traffic rules should be followed to ensure safety.

Neglecting Sun Protection

Bali’s sun is strong. Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and stay hydrated to avoid sunburn and heat exhaustion.

Many locals are used to the sun and will not need to wear sunscreen. Due to this, the price of sunscreen is often extremely inflated, as only the tourists will be purchasing it, to the point where it may even be more expensive than in your home country! We recommened bringing as much with you as you possibily can, as you will always need to wear sunscreen!

Not Negotiating Transportation Costs

Taxi and transportation costs can be inflated for tourists. We have heard of many stories where a price is given to the tourist, they get into the taxi, and when they reach their destination the price is much higher than expected. Often having the taxi doors locked, until they are forced to pay the extreme price.

Due to this, we recommened that you always use reputable taxi companies or apps. In Bali, Gojek and Grab work exactly the same as Uber in your home country. A fixed price is shown to you prior to the driver arriving, where you can either pay with cash or card. We found that booking transport via these apps are often a lot cheaper, safer and more reliable than a local taxi service.

Excessive Partying

While Bali offers nightlife and party scenes, overindulgence can lead to trouble. Drink responsibly and be mindful of your surroundings.

Please be mindful to not disrespect the local culutre. And as always, please do not drink drive when in Bali. It is very common to see tourists drinking all night and then hopping on their rented scooter or motorbike and driving back to their accomodation, all to save a few dollars! Just because the local traffic rules may not be as strict as your home country, you should still be safe!

Ignoring Safety Precautions

Bali’s waters can have strong currents. Follow safety guidelines when swimming or engaging in water activities.

Not Respecting Wildlife

Avoid engaging with wild animals used for tourist entertainment, as this often contributes to unethical practices and animal cruelty.

There also many dangerous animals due to Bali’s tropical climate. Please remeber to be cautious of this!

Conclusion

By being aware of these common mistakes and taking precautions, you can make the most of your Bali trip while respecting the local culture and environment.
